Why Farmhouses Have Big Windows

I know it’s hard to tell, but those are my farmers. Combines, grain cart, trucks. They’d tell you they aren’t doing anything special. Just quietly doing what farmers have been doing for generations. What thousands of farmers are doing tonight and every night until the harvest is in.

Watching the lights from the kitchen window as I get yet another round of lunches, suppers, coffees, and cookies for tomorrow, I see them getting closer to finishing the field. I have watched them seed and harvest from this window for over 15 years. Not all of them have been good harvests but I still make the food and watch for the lights. Those big windows keep us connected, even when the equipment runs long after midnight.

And when they finally drive in the lane, someone will shout “field’s done” with as much joy for the first done as the last.

May your harvest be bountiful, your equipment run smoothly and your lunch kits always have something good inside.
